Four festive desserts with no added sugar, from date sandesh to sweet potato halwa

Dates, nuts, oats and sweet potato make four home desserts with no added sugar; people with diabetes still need to watch the portion.

Festivals mean sweets, but people with diabetes have to keep an eye on their blood sugar. Dates, nuts, oats and sweet potato can be turned into four desserts at home without added sugar. The recipes come from The Sugar Free Kitchen and Food52.

Date and nut sandesh: one cup of pitted dates, half a cup of chopped walnuts and pistachios, a pinch of salt, and grated coconut to garnish. Soften the dates in hot water for a short while if they are firm, blend them to a paste, mix in the nuts and salt, shape into small sandesh and sprinkle coconut on top.

Dark chocolate and almond energy balls: half a cup each of dark chocolate, oats and ground almonds, and four or five pitted dates. Blend the dates and oats to a paste, mix in the almonds, then the melted chocolate, roll into small balls and chill for half an hour. Check the pack for the sugar and total carbohydrate in the chocolate.

Oat laddu: one cup of ground oats, two tablespoons of ground flaxseed, half a cup of ground cashews and almonds, half a cup of date paste, two tablespoons of peanut butter, a little cinnamon and nutmeg, and some ghee. Mix the dry ingredients, work in the date paste, peanut butter and spices, adding more peanut butter if it is dry, shape with greased hands and chill.

Sweet potato halwa: two medium sweet potatoes, half a cup of milk, a tablespoon of ghee, a little jaggery, cinnamon and cardamom powder, and chopped almonds. Boil, peel and mash the potatoes, stir them in ghee, add the milk and cook on low heat until thick. Add the spices and only a very little jaggery, then the almonds.

No dessert is automatically safe for diabetes because it is made with dates, jaggery or sweet potato; sweet potato has fibre but also carbohydrate. How much to eat should follow your meal plan, your blood sugar and your doctor's advice.
