1Who we are
The Agro News is an online newspaper on the agriculture, farmers and rural economy of Bangladesh, in two editions: Bangla at theagronews.com and English at agronewstoday.com. Both sites are operated by Fish Expert Limited. What we publish is decided by our editorial desk; no party, company or advertiser has a say in it.
2What we publish
The sites carry two kinds of story, and the byline tells a reader which is which:
- Our own reporting: written by our reporters or our desk, such as the agro-ecological zone (AEZ) series and our features. These carry the reporter’s name, or “Online Desk”, as the byline.
- Reporting from other outlets and institutions: news from Bangladeshi and international outlets, research institutes and government agencies, which we summarise, rewrite or translate. These carry the original outlet’s or institution’s name as the byline, and name it again in a “Source” line at the end of the story.
We never present another outlet’s reporting as our own. Every byline has a page listing everything published under that name.
3Choosing stories
We choose news that is useful to farmers, herders, fishers and people working in agriculture: crops, livestock, fisheries, markets, weather, technology, policy and research; and alongside it environment, health, cooking, faith and daily life. When several outlets report the same event, we publish it once.
4Checking and accuracy
- Figures, names, places and dates are checked against the original source.
- When we rewrite another outlet’s story, we add no facts or quotes that are not in the original.
- Market prices come from the Department of Agricultural Marketing, fertiliser prices from government announcements, and weather from MET Norway, each named as the source.
- Farming advice is general information; before a decision about a particular field or farm, ask your local agriculture officer.
5Photographs and video
We show only pictures we have the right to use: our own photographs, freely licensed photographs from Wikimedia Commons (credited with the photographer and licence), and public-domain government photographs. We do not show other outlets’ photographs; when no suitable picture exists, the story runs without one. Video is embedded from YouTube, under the original channel’s name.
6Two languages, two editions
When a story runs in both editions, the two carry the same facts; translation changes the language, not the information. The Bangla edition follows standard Bangla spelling and a single house style.
7Advertising and editorial independence
Advertising is kept apart from the news and marked as advertising. Sponsored or paid reports carry a “Paid” label. No advertiser takes part in choosing, writing or editing our news.
8Dignity and privacy
Stories involving women, children, minorities, and victims of crime or accidents protect their dignity and privacy. A source who asks for anonymity keeps it.
9Corrections and right of reply
Errors are checked and corrected promptly. How to report one, how corrections are made, and how replies and removal requests are handled are set out in our corrections policy.
10For outlets and institutions
If you object to how your organisation’s reporting appears on our sites, or it is not credited properly, write to us with the story’s link. We will check it and either correct the credit or take the story down.
