Bored of paratha and roti at breakfast? Okonomiyaki, a popular Japanese dish, can be made at home. It looks like a thick pancake but tastes quite different, and a home version can be made with ingredients from any Bangladeshi market. Ajker Patrika's feature desk took the recipe from Just One Cookbook.

Ingredients: 4 cups shredded cabbage, 1 cup flour, 4 eggs, about 1 cup water or chicken stock, half a teaspoon baking powder, salt to taste, a little sugar, 2 chopped green chillies, half a cup chopped onion, 1 teaspoon chopped ginger and oil. Optionally, 200 to 250 grams of thinly sliced beef or chicken. To top: mayonnaise, tomato or chilli sauce, chopped spring onion and coriander.

Mix the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a large bowl and add water or stock a little at a time to make a thick batter, not too runny. Add the eggs, cabbage, onion, chillies and ginger and mix well; a little black pepper or chilli powder can go in too.

Heat a flat pan on low heat with a little oil. Pour in the mixture and shape it into a round, fairly thick pancake, scatter the meat on top, cover and cook for a few minutes. When the underside is firm and lightly browned, turn it carefully, cover and cook the other side. Check that the cabbage and meat are fully cooked before taking it off the heat.

Drizzle tomato sauce and mayonnaise over the hot okonomiyaki in a pattern, sprinkle with spring onion and coriander, and serve.
