Natore Sugar Mill will begin this season's cane crushing on 13 November. As part of the preparations its boiler was fired on Friday afternoon, 23 October. The management has set a target of crushing 90,000 tonnes of cane to produce 5,580 tonnes of sugar.
Mill officials said crushing is planned to run for 65 days, with a sugar recovery rate of 6.2 percent.
To encourage growers, the government has raised the price of cane by Tk 26 a quintal from last season. The mill will pay Tk 651 a quintal at its gate and Tk 637.46 at its cane collection centres.
Cane has been planted on 7,250 acres in the mill zone this year. The government has also paid incentives of Tk 1.48 crore (Tk 14,827,500) to 4,069 growers to promote early planting by improved methods.
Managing director Md Akhlasur Rahman said the boiler was fired after a prayer gathering following Friday's Jumu'ah prayer. Steam from the boiler will drive the crushing for the whole season, and a water trial will be run before production formally begins.
