Jamuna Fertilizer Factory in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, the country's second-largest urea plant, is producing again after a 16-day shutdown caused by a mechanical fault. Production restarted at 10:03 on Friday morning, 23 October, deputy general manager Delwar Hossain confirmed.
Factory sources said the plant had resumed production late on the night of 6 October after getting a gas connection, having been shut for about eight months by the gas shortage. A fault in its boiler plant on the night of 7 October stopped production again. With that fixed, the factory has been running since Friday morning.
The plant, run by the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), produced 1,700 tonnes of urea a day from its founding. It needs gas at 42 to 45 psi to run without interruption, but low gas pressure and technical faults had cut output to 1,200 tonnes.
When running, the factory supplies farmers through 1,900 dealers in 16 northern districts as well as Jamalpur, Sherpur and Tangail.
