Sowing of early maize has begun on the Teesta chars at Parulia in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat. Women are working alongside men in groups of five or six from morning to afternoon, earning Tk 300 to 400 a day.
Parul Begum of South Parulia village in Patikapara union earns Tk 400 a day, which she says helps cover household costs and her children's schooling. Rahima Begum, from the same area, said her husband's income alone is not enough to run the home, so women have come to the fields too.
Hatibandha upazila agriculture officer Harun Mia said the target for the Teesta chars this season is 2,290 hectares, and early sowing has begun on several chars. The work gives women jobs as farm labourers and brings extra income to their households.
