In the monsoon, Chalan Beel and the waters around it yield many kinds of fish, so a market for chai still meets at Chatmohar in the Chalan Beel area. A chai is a fish trap woven from bamboo and cane; by size they go by local names such as kholsuni, dhundi, bitti, khadun, bason and duari.
Sellers complain that the market no longer fills as it used to. China nets have taken its old shine, they say, and there is now very little profit in making the traps. The photo story, from the railway ground in Chatmohar upazila, Pabna, is by Prothom Alo photographer Hasan Mahmud; his pictures are on the source page, and the one here shows traditional fishing methods in Bangladesh.
