Dhaka kitchen basket costs more as green chilli climbs back above Tk 150

Green chilli is back above Tk 150 in Dhaka markets, with flour, oil, garlic and bay leaf also dearer, though rice and pulses remain comparatively steady.

Items go into the shopping bag one after another, and the arithmetic no longer works.

Oil, flour, spices, vegetables, fish, meat and milk — the cost of almost every essential is going up.

The picture emerged from a tour of Dhaka markets on Tuesday and an analysis of the price list of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.

Green chilli is back above Tk 150. Flour, oil, garlic and bay leaf have also risen.

Added to fish, meat, eggs and milk, the monthly shopping bill is under growing pressure.

Some items are nevertheless cheaper than a year ago, and the rice and pulse markets remain comparatively steady.

Green chilli usually rises at the end of the monsoon, when continuous rain damages plots and supply falls; prices ease once fresh consignments reach the market.
