The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone named Murasu. With gusty winds expected, the Meteorological Department told the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports on Sunday 1 November to lower distant cautionary signal one and hoist distant warning signal two.
The department said the deep depression over the south-east and adjoining south-west Bay of Bengal moved west-north-west and intensified into a cyclone. At noon it lay at latitude 12.0 degrees north and longitude 85.2 degrees east.
At that time the cyclone was 1,350 kilometres south-west of Chattogram port, 1,290 kilometres from Cox’s Bazar, 1,260 kilometres from Mongla and 1,245 kilometres from Payra.
Maximum sustained wind within 54 kilometres of the centre is 62 kilometres an hour, rising to 88 kilometres an hour in gusts or squalls. The sea is very rough near the centre.
The forecast says the cyclone may intensify further into a severe cyclone and then move north-west to cross the Andhra coast of India on 2 November.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been told to stay close to the coast and move with caution until further notice.
