Early winter cauliflower has started arriving at Mahasthan in Bogura, one of the largest vegetable markets in the north. A photo series by Prothom Alo photographer Soel Rana shows the market as it is now: heaps of fresh cauliflower wherever you look.
Farmers are shown bringing the crop straight from the fields on vans. Cauliflower now dominates the market, and other early winter vegetables fill the yard around it. In one picture a farmer holds up a freshly cut head and smiles, because the yield has been good this year.
The smile has not survived the price. As supply kept rising, the price of cauliflower at Mahasthan fell by about half in a single day, according to a Prothom Alo video report, and prices have also eased in Dhaka's markets.
Growers who spent weeks tending the crop are disappointed with what buyers now offer, and many wait at the market unsure whether they will get a fair price. Buyers, meanwhile, are happy: another picture shows a customer carrying cauliflower away.
Farmers plant early precisely because the first winter vegetables usually fetch good prices. When too much reaches market at once, that advantage disappears, as it has at Mahasthan this week.
