Abu Dhabi has introduced a Premium Food Mark for locally produced chilled chicken, according to a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report on the poultry sector of the United Arab Emirates. The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority launched the mark at the "Make it in the Emirates 2026" event.

The scheme sets technical standards that go beyond existing UAE requirements and cover the whole poultry value chain: farming and feed practices, slaughtering, processing, packaging and distribution. It includes requirements on animal welfare, sustainability and the quality of the final product, and a classification system that places products meeting the standards into quality tiers.

Products that are awarded the mark will go through conformity assessment and certification to make sure they keep meeting the standards. The authorities say the aim is to raise consumer confidence, encourage higher production standards and make the local poultry industry more competitive and sustainable.

The quality tiers and the official logo have not yet been published.

For poultry farms in the emirate, the mark offers a way to set their chilled birds apart on shop shelves from imported frozen chicken, provided they meet standards that reach back to the farm and the feed.

The report was summarised by Melanie Epp for The Poultry Site.
