Gumai Beel, stretching along the foot of the hills in Rangunia, Chattogram, is one of the country's biggest granaries. With the monsoon over, Aman rice is now growing across the wetland. Prothom Alo photographer Sourav Das photographed it from the Lichubagan area of Rangunia.

The pictures show a carpet of green paddy spread across the beel, plot after plot under cultivation. From a distance the whole wetland looks wrapped in a green sheet, with hills behind it and blue sky above.

Closer shots show clumps of young rice plants and a farmer at work in the middle of the green. Rice has been planted in the folds of the hills beside the beel too.

The photo story also shows the other side of the wetland: a brick kiln has grown up on one edge, and a road cuts straight across the fields.

The photographs were published in Prothom Alo's photo section on 5 October, where they can be seen. The cover here is an openly licensed picture of Gumai Beel.
