An orange garden on the plains: 75 fruiting trees at Ashoknagar, West Bengal

Narayan Mondal's eight-bigha garden at Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas has oranges on 75 trees this year, shaded by green net, and visitors are paying 10 rupees to see it.

Oranges on the plains of West Bengal usually come from Darjeeling or Sittong. At Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas, on those same plains, Narayan Mondal has planted an orange garden on eight bighas. Fruit has set on 75 trees this year, he told Sangbad Pratidin.

Mondal said he has been growing oranges for several years. The yield is well up on earlier years, he said, and is double what he expected. He claims the fruit from his nursery also has a special taste.

He also explained how the trees cope with the climate of the plains: the whole garden is covered with a special green net so that direct sunlight does not fall on them.

The garden opened to visitors last Sunday. Tickets cost 10 rupees a head and it will stay open until 10 January. People from the surrounding area are crowding in to see it.
