US potato processors used more of the 2025 crop even as total production and grower prices weakened, according to USDA figures reported by All Ag News.
Total processing reached 286 million hundredweight, up 5 percent from 2024. Frozen french fries and other frozen products took 173 million hundredweight, 6 percent more than the year before.
Chips and shoestrings used 58.3 million hundredweight, also up 5 percent. Canning use jumped 40 percent to 2.66 million hundredweight, while dehydrated products slipped 1 percent to 42.1 million hundredweight.
Growers sold 388 million hundredweight in all, down less than 1 percent. Table-stock sales rose 2 percent to 101 million hundredweight, while seed sales fell 8 percent and sales for livestock feed dropped 16 percent.
Processing absorbed a larger share of a smaller crop but did not stop returns falling: the average potato price dropped 90 cents to $10.80 per hundredweight and the total value of sales fell 9 percent. One hundredweight in US measure is 100 pounds, about 45.4 kg.
