Farmers in Pirganj, Rangpur, are busy preparing land and planting murikata onions to meet winter demand, relieved that seed is somewhat cheaper this year, BSS's Rangpur correspondent reports.
According to the upazila agriculture office, the target this season is 2,050 hectares of murikata onions. Hoping for good yields and fair prices, more farmers take up the crop every year.
Abdus Samad, a farmer in the municipal area, said he was growing onions again but the crop would suffer if he could not get fertiliser later. Ranu Mia hopes to profit if yield and prices are good, and Sultan Mahmud said domestic onions should fetch a good price if none are imported from India.
Upazila agriculture officer Suman Ahmed said there is no fertiliser shortage in the upazila and farmers need not panic, and that farmers are being advised to meet the target. Sub-assistant agriculture officer Sujan Mia said field staff are advising farmers in the fields.
Murikata onions are grown by planting mature bulbs, from whose base new onions grow, which is why the crop is also called mulkata onion, though it is better known as murikata.
