Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) will soon launch a Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Latif has announced, saying this will allow SAU students to play an important role in agricultural mechanisation.
He was speaking on Wednesday, 2 July, at a seminar on the role of farm machinery developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) in mechanising Bangladesh's agriculture. BARI-developed machinery was exhibited at the university's TSC complex the same day.
Why mechanisation matters
"We must move into the age of mechanisation with the times; there is no alternative," the vice-chancellor said. Farm labour is shrinking, and farmers no longer want their sons to become farmers, causing a labour shortage that only mechanisation can fill. He added that Bangladesh must use drone technology in agriculture and that the country's agricultural engineers should be the first to take this up.

Special guests were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Belal Hossain, Director of Student Counselling and Guidance Prof. Dr. Moha. Ashabul Haque and Proctor Prof. Dr. Md. Arfan Ali. The keynote paper was presented by Mahedi Hasan, agricultural engineer in BARI's Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering (FMPE) Division, and the session was chaired by Dr. Md. Nurul Amin, chief scientific officer of the FMPE Division.
