Emergency repairs have been halted after parts of an embankment at Chowdhury Para in Bajalia union of Satkania, Chattogram, collapsed into the Sangu River. Homes, a mosque, a graveyard, a village road and cropland are under threat, Amar Desh reports.
Locals say heavy rain and hill runoff damaged a section of the embankment in early July and water entered the village. The Bangladesh Water Development Board allocated Tk 19 lakh for emergency repair, and it was decided to lay geo-tubes along 150 metres.
Work began recently, but fresh erosion set in and several sections of the embankment fell into the river while it was under way. Students now take a risk using the eroded road.
Residents Mozammel Haque, Mohammad Jamal and Mohammad Forkan said they live in fear of erosion every monsoon, and that a wider area could go into the river if it continues.
Mahbub Alam, sub-assistant engineer at the Patiya water development section, said the embankment had collapsed at the planned site, so work could not continue under the earlier plan. A new survey is needed to settle on a lasting method before work restarts.
