The Quranic prayer for a happy marriage, from Surah Al-Furqan

Islam treats love and mutual respect between husband and wife as a blessing from God, yet almost every marriage goes through spells of distance and misunderstanding. In a piece by Prothom Alo's religion desk, the writers say sincere prayer can renew a fading bond at such times, and that the Quran itself teaches a prayer for it.

The prayer is verse 74 of Surah Al-Furqan. Transliterated, it reads: Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama. Its meaning: "Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring the coolness of our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous."

The phrase 'qurrata a'yun' literally means 'coolness of the eyes', the relief the eyes feel when a cool breeze follows intense heat, the piece explains. In family life it describes a spouse whose presence lifts tiredness and worry. Surah Ar-Rum, verse 21, likewise says God created mates so that people may find tranquillity in them, and placed love and mercy between them.

Citing Ibn Kathir's commentary, the piece says the greatest 'coolness of the eyes' for a believer is to see their spouse obedient to God and of good character. The closing words, asking to be 'leaders for the righteous', mean, according to as-Sa'di's commentary, not a hunger for power but setting an example of honesty, humility and family love that inspires others.

The writers suggest two ways to make the prayer part of daily life: reciting it after the five daily prayers, especially after Fajr and Isha, or together as a couple before sleep; and recalling it quietly instead of reacting in anger when a disagreement begins.

Citing a hadith in Sahih Bukhari, the piece notes that even placing a morsel of food in one's wife's mouth earns reward, so practising love in marriage is itself an act of worship.
