Ten animals at Dhaka National Zoo live without a companion of their kind

An African rhinoceros alone since 2013, a hamadryas baboon, a kangaroo and seven more animals at the National Zoo in Mirpur have no mate of their own species, in pictures by Prothom Alo's Mir Hossain.

Ten animals at the National Zoo in Mirpur, Dhaka, live without a single companion of their own species. One of them, an African rhinoceros, has been alone since 2013.

People and a familiar enclosure surround them, but none of their kind. Some sit alone, some pace the same corner of the cage, some pass the hours in silence. The pictures are a reminder that company, like food and shelter, is part of what an animal needs to live.

The ten are a striped hyena, a hamadryas baboon, an African rhinoceros, an African white lion, an Indian sarus crane, a spotted hyena, a kangaroo, a hoolock gibbon, a cassowary and a monkey the zoo lists as a kulu. The cassowary has been alone for about 17 years; the baboon since 2022, the kangaroo since 2023 and the monkey since March 2025.
