Oxbo has added machine-learning automation to its berry harvesters. AutoHarvest reads field conditions in real time and adjusts the machine on the fly instead of leaving those calls to the operator, and it is available now on the company's 2027 blueberry harvesters.
Integrated cameras and algorithms make continuous adjustments as the machine moves through the field. The operator or field manager sets harvest goals with two input sliders, and the system then manages ground speed, head speed, head pinch, and belt and fan speeds in the background, aiming for consistent results as conditions change within and between passes — one of the harder parts of berry harvesting.
Oxbo says the system was built to work across a range of harvesting conditions and production targets, whether a grower is picking for fresh-market quality or trying to maximise processed-fruit recovery. "AutoHarvest simplifies one of the most challenging parts of berry harvesting by helping operators achieve consistent results across changing field conditions," said Kathryn Vanweerdhuizen, director of sales and marketing for Oxbo Fruit.
The company also pitches it as a way to lower the skill needed to dial in a machine: "AutoHarvest allows operators of any skill level to expertly set and fine-tune your harvester for the variety, conditions, and fruit program goals," Vanweerdhuizen said. That matters to growers managing seasonal labour, where experienced harvester operators are hard to find and keep; moving the fine-tuning into an automated layer reduces the dependence on operator judgement for quality and recovery.
Oxbo has facilities in Lynden, Washington; Marshfield, Wisconsin; Madera, California; and Byron, New York, and two locations in Europe.
