The winter vegetable season has begun in Rangapani village in Rangamati town, and the people doing the work are local hill women. Preparing land, sowing seed, tending seedlings and weeding now fill their days, as a photo story by Prothom Alo photographer Supriyo Chakma shows.
The same plots carry a mix of red amaranth, mustard greens, radish, aubergine, tomato, beans, pumpkin, coriander and maize. To keep the soil fertile the women make their own compost from cow dung, straw and dry leaves.
Nets and polythene are strung across the fields to keep birds and pests off the crops. Besides feeding their own families, the women sell the fresh, chemical-free vegetables at local markets for extra household income.
Mixed plots on the slopes beside their homes, fed with their own compost and guarded with nets, give small hill households both vegetables for the table and produce to sell.
