As autumn turns to hemanta, purple and white water hyacinth flowers have bloomed across the Singahara river, ponds, beels and low-lying land in Dimla upazila, Nilphamari. Clustered among the green leaves, they make some ponds look from a distance like a carpet of flowers.
Passers-by stop to look and record photos and videos on their phones. Local student Sultan Hossain said such scenes lift the spirits amid the pressure of studies, and resident Shahinur Islam said the flowers carry childhood memories for many.
Dimla upazila agriculture officer Mir Hasan Al Banna also pointed to the environmental side. The flowers are beautiful, he said, but when water hyacinth spreads too far it blocks light and air from entering the water and can upset the balance of aquatic life.
He urged people to enjoy the sight while also paying attention to keeping the wetlands' ecological balance.
