The sea is a vast economic opportunity and a unique store of the blue economy. But unplanned fishing is causing marine fish species to disappear, the number of marine animal species is falling and the sea's ecosystem is being damaged. On paper, Bangladesh has 475 marine fish species, but reality is different.
Nothing escapes the nets
Visits to several marine fish landing centres and wholesale markets in Cox's Bazar show that no fish, from the smallest to medium and large, escapes fishers. Nets are made so that even small fish are caught, including tiny fish that cannot be separated from marine debris.
Only 250 to 300 species
The Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation and the marine fisheries and technology centre say 250 to 300 species exist. Indiscriminate fishing is making marine fish species disappear and threatening marine life.
