Three farmers hurt in a fertiliser distribution scuffle in Melandah, Jamalpur

Tempers flared at Beltoil bazar when farmers could not get the fertiliser they wanted; the upazila agriculture officer and UNO say it was a queue dispute and supplies are sufficient.

Three farmers were hurt in a scuffle during fertiliser distribution at Beltoil bazar in Ghosherpara union, Melandah upazila, Jamalpur, on the afternoon of Monday, 5 October.

According to local sources, farmers who could not get as much fertiliser as they needed argued with a sub-assistant agriculture officer, and tension spread between the dealer, the officer and the farmers before local people tried to calm things down.

Among the injured was Alim Uddin, 45, of Chhobilapur village; the other two were not named. All three received first aid locally.

Upazila agriculture officer Md Abdur Rauf said there had been an argument over who would collect first and that one or two people may have been hurt in the jostling. The situation is now normal and distribution is continuing, he said.

Upazila executive officer Jinnatul Ara said the trouble was over the order of collection, that she had received no report of injuries, and that the upazila has enough fertiliser with no shortage.

The report is by Banglanews24's district correspondent in Jamalpur.
