Native fish of many kinds reach the morning fish market at Pollimongol, on the edge of Bogura Sadar upazila. The sellers say the fish come from Chalan Beel in Natore, and buyers crowd in from early morning, ready to pay more for them fresh. Prothom Alo photographer Soyel Rana captured the market in thirteen pictures.
The pictures show fresh boal (wallago) and tara baim (spiny eel) laid out for sale; big tara baim cost more but are especially prized. Fresh small shrimp from Chalan Beel are in demand too.
Native koi (climbing perch) jump in a basin, beside pots of live shing (stinging catfish) and tengra from the rivers and beels. Baskets of mixed small fish hold fresh shol (snakehead), and trays shine with silver puti and mola.
A buyer haggles over a basket of mixed small native fish; a seller counts the money after a sale. Shoppers pack the market from the first light of morning for the fish they want.
