The farm calendar: what to do in March

Water and brown planthopper in the boro, seedbeds for summer rice, the wheat harvest, sowing mung and black gram, sunflower and soybean, summer vegetables, mango and litchi blossom, the pond and the herd: March's list.

Others

March closes the winter season and opens the summer one. The last care of the rabi crops and the first work of the kharif season fall in the same month.

Rice

  • Boro: keep the field watered; watch for brown planthopper and blast; apply urea and potash as needed.
  • Summer rice: prepare seedbeds and choose high-yielding varieties.

Wheat

  • Harvest; clear and prepare the land for the next crop.

Pulses

  • Sow mung, black gram and chickpea; keep the fields weeded and irrigated.

Oilseeds

  • Prepare land for sunflower and soybean; fertilise and control weeds.

Vegetables

  • Sow gourd, pumpkin, bitter gourd and okra; weed and irrigate.
  • Lift the last cabbage, cauliflower and radish for market.

Fruit

  • Protect mango, litchi and jackfruit blossom; the month is right for planting new saplings.

Fish

  • Clean ponds and change water; increase feed; add organic manure for natural food.

Livestock

  • Improve the ration of cattle and goats; check health and vaccinate.

Timely work in March means a productive summer and a better income.
