The farm calendar: what to do in February

Water and fertiliser for boro, wheat diseases, harvesting pulses and mustard, sowing sunflower and soybean, lifting winter vegetables and sowing summer ones, protecting mango and litchi blossom, the pond and the herd: February's list.

Others

February is the hinge of the farming year — the end of winter, the start of summer, and a month of harvesting, sowing and care.

Rice

  • Boro: hold water on the field; irrigate for the growing plants; watch for stem borer and leaf-folder; apply urea, TSP and potash as needed.

Wheat

  • Keep the field weed-free and properly irrigated; look for powdery mildew and brown rust and treat them.

Pulses

  • Harvest lentil, mung and chickpea; clear the field for the next crop.

Oilseeds

  • Cut mustard before the pods dry and shatter; prepare land for sunflower and soybean with the right fertiliser.

Vegetables

  • Lift cabbage, cauliflower, carrot and radish.
  • Sow gourd, pumpkin, okra and bitter gourd; weed and irrigate well.

Fruit

  • Protect mango, jackfruit and litchi blossom with insecticide and fungicide; plant new saplings.

Fish

  • Change pond water regularly and feed; add organic manure for natural food.

Livestock

  • Add dry straw and green grass to the ration of cattle and goats; vaccinate and keep the shed clean.

Done on time and done right, February's work is next season's income.
