The farm calendar: what to do in January

Boro seedbeds and land, winter vegetables, wheat and maize, pulses and mustard, potato, the pond and the cattle shed: the January to-do list for the Bangladeshi farm.

Others

January is the heart of the rabi season. Timely care now decides the boro harvest and the winter vegetables.

Rice

  • Boro seedbeds: keep water on them; treat disease or pests at once; prepare to transplant at 30–35 days.
  • Boro land: plough, level and fertilise ready for transplanting.

Vegetables

  • Keep tending cauliflower, cabbage, radish, carrot, bean and brinjal; shelter them from frost and fog.
  • Irrigate as needed and weed promptly.

Wheat and maize

  • Wheat: irrigate at the critical stages; treat disease when it appears.
  • Maize: apply fertiliser on time; guard against pests.

Pulses and oilseeds

  • Weed lentil, khesari and mung regularly; irrigate if the soil dries.
  • Irrigate mustard at flowering if the field is dry; act fast against aphids.

Potato

  • Irrigate and protect against late blight; inspect the field before lifting.

Fish and livestock

  • Keep pond water clean and feed regularly.
  • Keep the cattle shed warm against the cold, with enough feed and clean water.

The right work in January is the foundation of the year's yield.
