Prices of winter and seasonal vegetables have started to fall at Hili market in Hakimpur upazila, Dinajpur. As new winter vegetables come in, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, green chilli and several others have dropped to about half their price in two days, some by Tk 20 to Tk 40 a kg.
At the market on Monday (19 October), pointed gourd that sold for Tk 40 a kg two days earlier was going for Tk 20. Bitter gourd was down from Tk 80 to Tk 40, radish from Tk 50 to Tk 30 and brinjal from Tk 60 to Tk 40. Beans fell from Tk 150 to Tk 100, cauliflower from Tk 80 to Tk 50 and cabbage from Tk 70 to Tk 40. Green chilli was down from Tk 100 to Tk 50 a kg.
Potatoes were selling at Tk 20 to Tk 25 a kg and onions at Tk 40.
Vegetable trader Tareq said supply has risen over the past two days as winter vegetables start to arrive, and because traders can buy more cheaply at wholesale, retail prices have come down too. Prices could fall further if supply keeps growing, he said, though that depends on how much arrives and on demand.
Shopper Khokon Islam said only recently a few vegetables cost a lot of money, and with pointed gourd and bitter gourd at half price there is some relief. Raihan Hossain, who lives on a limited income, said vegetables had been taking a large share of money already stretched by rice, lentils and oil, and further falls would help ordinary people.
Market people say supply is rising gradually with the start of the winter vegetable season and, if the trend holds, prices may fall further in the coming days, though weather, production, transport costs and demand will decide.
