The government has decided to form 20 special committees to step up dengue prevention and cleaning in Dhaka, mark out and re-dig canals, and oversee tree planting. Ten will work in zones of Dhaka North City Corporation and ten in Dhaka South.
The decision was taken at a review meeting of the Local Government Division on Sunday, 18 October, chaired by Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, with Ahmed Sohel Monzur, State Minister for Housing and Public Works, as special guest.
Each zonal committee will be led by a director-level officer of the Prime Minister's Office and include representatives of the Local Government Division, the Health Services Division, the Secondary and Higher Education Division, Dhaka WASA, the metropolitan police, and the engineering, waste management, medical and enforcement wings of the two city corporations, along with an executive magistrate.
The committees will run cleaning drives on the ground, mark canal boundaries and speed up digging, and make sure mosquito control is carried out. A high-level monitoring committee convened by the housing state minister will oversee and coordinate all 20.
