Dengue patients are increasing day by day at the 250-bed Sadar Hospital in Magura, and the ward is running out of space. Every ward has mosquito nets, yet patients are not seen using them, and because of pressure from other cases, non-dengue patients are being kept on the dengue ward, raising fears of infection spreading.
Ward in-charge Sumaiya Ahmed said 23 dengue patients were admitted in August 2026 and 83 in September, and 34 in just two days, 14 and 15 October. No dengue patient has died at the hospital so far, and many have recovered and gone home.
Nurse Halima said every patient has been given a net and repeatedly told to stay inside it, but many do not, and relatives sometimes scold the nurses when reminded.
Other patients are anxious. Asha Bharati Biswas of Jamrultala said dengue patients stay outside their nets while other patients are put on the dengue ward, and she fears a mosquito that bites a dengue patient could infect others. Jannu Sheikh of Katakhali, admitted for four days with an ordinary fever, said some people are leaving the hospital out of that fear.
Dr Md Mehedi Hasan, senior consultant (medicine), said about 400 dengue patients have recovered and gone home from the hospital and none has died. Patients are told to stay under nets at all times. For prevention, he advised keeping the surroundings of homes clean and not letting water collect anywhere.
Those involved say that if cases keep rising, the hospital needs more beds and better care, and steps to make sure nets are used, wards kept clean, mosquitoes controlled and patients made aware.
