About 1,500 bags of illegally hoarded fertiliser have been seized from a seed shop's godown in Damurhuda, Chuadanga. Around 8pm on Saturday, the upazila administration, the agriculture department and police raided the New Hauli village godown of Naim Auto Mobile and Seed Store of Damurhuda bazar, seized the fertiliser and sealed the godown.

The haul was 370 bags of TSP, 1,120 bags of DAP and 10 bags of MOP.

The drive was led by Damurhuda's assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Sajjad Hossain, with upazila agriculture officer Krishna Sarkar, agricultural extension officer Ashfakur Rahman and police present.

Agriculture officer Krishna Sarkar filed a written complaint with Damurhuda Model Police Station naming the godown's owner, Hasanul Naim of Dashmi village, as an absconding accused. The officer in charge, Sheikh Mezbah Uddin, said a case was being prepared, and the agriculture officer said the police would take the next legal steps.

TSP and DAP are phosphate fertilisers that farmers need most while preparing land for rabi crops such as potato, vegetables, wheat and maize. Stocks held back in godowns instead of being sold cut supply in the market and risk pushing prices up, which is why drives at the start of the season matter to farmers.

The report was filed by Samakal's Damurhuda (Chuadanga) correspondent.
