The National Seed Board has registered and released two rice varieties developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) and one wheat variety developed by the Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) for the Boro season. It also registered 10 hybrid rice varieties from private companies for Boro.
The approval came at the board's 111th meeting on Tuesday (9 January) at the Ministry of Agriculture conference room in the Secretariat, chaired by Agriculture Secretary and board chair Wahida Akter.
The rice varieties
BRRI dhan107 is a premium-quality variety. According to the ministry, it yields about 8.2 tonnes per hectare on average, with a life cycle of 143 days; the grain is long and slender and the cooked rice fluffy.
BRRI dhan108 yields about 8.5 tonnes per hectare on average, with a 146-day life cycle. The grain is slender and medium-long, much like Zirashail, and the cooked rice is fluffy.
Wheat-5
BWMRI's Wheat-5 is an early, high-yielding variety averaging 4.2 to 5 tonnes per hectare, with a life cycle of 107 days. The ministry says it is heat-tolerant and resistant to blast and leaf rust.
