For 34 years Rezaul Kibria Babul, of Omarpur union in Char Fasson, Bhola, has been planting trees, and the landscape of his village has changed with them. The imam of Kalapania Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque regards tree planting as sadaqah jariyah, an act of lasting charity.

In 1993-94 he sold ancestral property for about Tk 8 lakh and set up a nursery at Bhuiyarhat. He then began handing out saplings free and urging people over loudspeakers to plant trees.

Over 34 years he has planted some 50,000 to 60,000 saplings of fruit, medicinal and other species, as well as 25,000 to 30,000 palmyra palm seeds. His aim is to protect the balance of nature and leave a green, liveable environment for future generations.

On Wednesday, 14 October, Babul met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister's Office in the Secretariat, where the prime minister assured him of support in recognition of his work.

Local people have welcomed his effort, and Char Fasson's upazila nirbahi officer Rumana Afroz has praised it. Babul hopes that with government support he can plant on a larger scale and draw more people into protecting the environment.
