Beetroot Halwa Recipe

Beetroot halwa, made with coconut, ghee and cashews, offers a colourful change from traditional halwa for Shab-e-Barat.

Cooking

Shab-e-Barat is a special night of self-purification, prayer and worship for Muslims. On this holy occasion many homes prepare sweet dishes alongside worship. If you want to serve something with a different taste and colour from traditional halwa, beetroot halwa could be a great choice. Made from nutritious beetroot, it looks attractive and tastes delightful, and it is easy to make at home.

Ingredients

  • Beetroot: 2 cups
  • Grated coconut: 2 cups
  • Sugar: half a cup
  • Ghee: 3 tablespoons
  • Cardamom powder: half a teaspoon
  • Cashew nuts: 3 tablespoons

Method

First peel the beetroot and blend it. Put 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan, lightly fry the cashew nuts and set them aside. Then add the rest of the ghee to the pan and lightly fry the beetroot and coconut. When fried, add the sugar and keep stirring. Finally stir in the cardamom powder and take it off the heat. Your healthy halwa with a different flavour is ready.
