Ehtishamul Haque Hira of Bangladesh has won first place in the men's hifz (memorisation) category of the 2026 International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Competition in Malaysia, Ittefaq reports. A student of Markazu Faizil Quran Al Islami in Dhaka, he scored 97 to share the title; Abdul Rahman Jamal Ibrahim of Syria, on the same score, was placed second, and Muhammad Izzul Afnan Sajali of host Malaysia third with 96.33.
The five-day 66th competition opened on 6 October at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, inaugurated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and ended on Friday. Prizes were presented on Saturday (10 October). Bangladeshis living in Malaysia congratulated Hira.
In the other categories, Muhammad Fauzi Ridwan of Indonesia won men's recitation (94.67), Nur Shakura Mohamad Musa of Sarawak, Malaysia, won women's recitation (91.83), and Chafatou Issoufou of Niger won women's memorisation (96.17).
Drawing on records from the Huffazul Quran Foundation Bangladesh and other bodies, Ittefaq reports that from 1982 to 2026, 35 Bangladeshi hafiz have won 43 first places at international competitions abroad, the figures differing because some won more than once. The run began with Qari Abdul Haque's first place in Libya in 1982.
