The day at the fish landing centre on Port Road in Barishal city starts at dawn. Fish caught by fishers on the surrounding rivers are unloaded from boats and the buying and selling begins. Wholesalers, traders, porters, buyers and sellers crowd the ghat. The trade around the river and its fish is a large part of Barishal's economy and city life.

Prothom Alo photographer Saiyan caught its moments: fish laid out in rows for sale, a vendor holding up his catch, large prawns being packed in ice.

Big sea and river fish are sold beside farmed rohu. One seller has tilapia, stinging catfish (shing) and climbing perch (koi); elsewhere there are large pomfret (rupchanda), a few gobies (baila) and croakers (poa) arranged in a basin.

With hilsa, rohu, pangas and many other species, the ghat is the centre of livelihoods for the region's fishers and fish traders.
