A low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas within the next 48 hours and may intensify, bringing more rain. Rainfall has already picked up, and the heatwave over the country has broken. The Met Office issued the forecast on Thursday, 17 September.

The extended axis of the monsoon trough runs from Rajasthan through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam, the forecast says; the monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over the north Bay of Bengal.

Until Friday evening, 18 September, light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are likely at many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions and at a few places in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, with moderately heavy falls in places. Day and night temperatures are expected to stay much the same.

For the 24 hours from Friday evening, rain with gusty winds is likely at one or two places in all eight divisions and temperatures may rise slightly. From Saturday evening, 19 September, rain is likely at many places in Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Khulna, with moderately heavy to heavy falls in places.

From Sunday evening, 20 September, rain is likely at a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and at one or two places in the other five; from Monday evening, 21 September, at a few places in all eight divisions, with moderately heavy falls in places. Over the extended five-day period, the Met Office says, the tendency for rain and thundershowers may increase.

Aman is in its growing stage in the fields and early winter vegetable seedlings are being raised; the return of rain after the heat is welcome for aman, but if the low deepens, prolonged heavy rain becomes a risk for vegetables and seedbeds on low ground.
