Eating panta-ilish on Pohela Boishakh has been a custom for generations. But like last year, the Bengali New Year again fell in the month of Ramadan this year, so many Bengalis are not so excited about it.

Still, you can celebrate the New Year by having a hilsa dish for dinner after iftar. One such tasty hilsa dish is aam sorshe ilish, hilsa with green mango and mustard.

It goes very well with panta (soaked rice), plain white rice or pulao. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Hilsa, 4 pieces
  • Mustard oil, 50 g
  • Black cumin (kalojira), a little
  • Green chillies, 4
  • Turmeric, a little
  • Chilli powder
  • Green mango, 1
  • Black and white mustard paste, 50 g
  • Salt to taste

Method

Clean the hilsa and rub it with salt. Heat the oil in a pan and temper it with the black cumin and green chillies.

A little later add the pieces of green mango. Add salt, turmeric and chilli powder one after another, fry a little, then pour in water.

When the mango is cooked, strain the mustard paste and add its juice. Then add the pieces of hilsa. Once the hilsa is cooked, the aam sorshe ilish is ready.
