Six lakh rohu and catla fry released into the Ganges at Howrah

Under India's Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, 200,000 fry went in at each of three Howrah ghats to rebuild fish numbers for fishers.

Six lakh (600,000) fish fry, mostly rohu and catla, were released into the Ganges at Howrah, West Bengal, on Friday (6 November). Each of three ghats, including Ramkrishnapur in Shibpur, received 200,000 hatchery-raised fry, which fishers will be able to catch once grown.

The release falls under the fish-stocking programme of India's central Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. It was organised by the West Bengal State Fishermen's Cooperative Federation (Benfish) with the Howrah district administration and the assistant director of fisheries.

Fish numbers in the Ganges have fallen sharply and fishing there faces various restrictions, the report says, so fishers and fisheries officials see the move as significant.

Umesh Rai, state minister for municipal affairs and urban development, who attended at Ramkrishnapur, said it aims to help fishers and reduce pollution in the river. The reporter is Suhrid Das.
