Anglers pay Tk 26,000 a seat for a catla contest at a Sarail pond

Twenty-four anglers cast at Biresh Dighi in Brahmanbaria for five prizes worth Tk 435,000 in a contest run by a local fish farming society.

An angling contest ran from 6:15am to 5pm on Friday (6 November) at Biresh Dighi in Kalikachchha union, Sarail, Brahmanbaria. Twenty-four anglers from Dhaka, Kishoreganj, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria each paid Tk 26,000 for a ticket.

Tickets brought the organisers Tk 624,000. Five prizes total Tk 435,000: Tk 200,000 for first place, Tk 100,000 for second, Tk 50,000 for third, Tk 45,000 for fourth and Tk 40,000 for fifth. One competitor said fishing costs another Tk 10,000 to 12,000 on top of the ticket.

Anglers sat on 24 platforms around the pond, placed by lottery. The pond holds catla weighing 5 to 10 kilograms. By 2pm Mofazzal Hossain of Madhabpur, Habiganj, led with four catla of 6.74 kg, 6.485 kg, 4.97 kg and 4.05 kg.

A society called the Sarail Fish Farming Project holds such contests several times a year at the pond of about two and three-quarter acres. Its president Ali Mia told Prothom Alo this was the seventh this year.
