Twenty illegal dams pulled out of the Padma after fishers complain

Authorities in Charbhadrasan, Faridpur, removed 20 illegal dams built inside the Padma and burned seized current nets and China duari traps.

The upazila administration in Charbhadrasan, Faridpur, removed 20 illegal dams built inside the Padma River on Friday morning (6 November). Upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate Zulhas Hossain Saurav led the drive with Ansar members.

Administration sources said dams at Char Shalipur and the Khan area of Sit Mirzapur had blocked the natural flow of the river. An influential local group was using them to catch fish, disrupting the movement and production of fish and keeping ordinary fishers from their catch.

Affected fishers filed a written complaint with Md Shahidul Islam Khan Babul, member of parliament for Faridpur-4. He told the upazila officer to investigate and act quickly, and the drive followed.

Saurav said a dam built across flowing water is an offence under the fisheries law. Such dams interfere with the breeding and movement of fish and upset the balance of the aquatic environment. Seized current nets and China duari traps were burned on the riverbank, and he said similar drives will continue.

Local fishers said the removal clears the way for the river to recover. They want regular monitoring so that nobody can block the river and their livelihoods again.
