Phones, WhatsApp and Facebook in the mosque: what a scholar advises

Mufti Abdul Qayyum says a phone may be used in the mosque for real needs while keeping its etiquette, but entertainment, idle social media use and disturbing worshippers should be avoided.

Phones, WhatsApp and Facebook in the mosque: what a scholar advises

Whether using a mobile phone in the mosque is sinful depends on how and why it is used, says Mufti Abdul Qayyum, a mufti and hadith teacher at Darul Quran Al Islamia Madrasa in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. He told Ittefaq Digital that the mosque is the house of Allah, set aside for worship and remembrance, and that every Muslim is responsible for respecting it.

Phones may be used for genuinely necessary and lawful purposes while keeping the mosque's etiquette, he said, but people should avoid idle browsing, games or entertainment, and watching photos or videos in a way that disturbs other worshippers.

If possible, leave the phone at home, the office or the shop; otherwise switch it off or to silent before entering. Ringtones and alerts should not carry music or unlawful words. Urgent calls should be taken outside where possible, or briefly and quietly in a secluded corner, with extra care during congregational prayer.

Essential messages on WhatsApp or Messenger are acceptable, but not idle chat, immoral content or anything that distracts others. Likewise Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram should not be used needlessly in the mosque, where attention should go to worship and remembrance, he said.

On wallpapers showing people or animals, worshippers are advised to ask a reliable scholar for the ruling.
