Tofoo & Co, the UK's leading tofu brand, has started building a factory at Malton Enterprise Park in North Yorkshire that will double its plant protein output and support annual sales of £73m, Green Queen reports. Work began last month and is due to finish by autumn 2027.
The site will have 3.5 times the current production space and help the company pass 10,000 tonnes of tofu a year by 2033. HSBC UK and the majority shareholder, Comitis Capital, are backing the development, and the leases on the existing buildings expire in 2028. The company, founded in 2015 by David Knibbs and Lydia Smith, bought the German seitan maker Topas earlier this year and sees growth in France and Germany.
The plant will include a development kitchen and a pilot plant, with 25% of its unallocated space kept for future products. Planned measures include wastewater reduction, full effluent treatment, on-site solar generation, heat recovery and electric vehicle charging. "This investment is about creating the foundations for our next chapter," said chief executive Knibbs. Apprenticeship schemes are planned.
The expansion comes as UK unit sales of plant-based meat fell 8.6% in 2025 and another 2.7% in the first half of 2026, while sales of tofu, tempeh and seitan rose 20.8% last year and 10.1% in the first half, figures cited by Green Queen. It links the shift to worry about ultra-processed food, citing a survey in which 78% of Britons said they were concerned about it.
Tofoo & Co accounts for half of all tofu bought in UK supermarkets and is the country's second-largest meat-free brand. Its 2025 turnover was £26.6m, up 11.2%, with gross profit up 10.4% to £10.6m. The report is by Anay Mridul.
