The lives of marginal people in the Thakurgaon border area have changed through the coordinated efforts of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). People whose only occupation was once carrying goods across the border are now engaged in productive work. As crime has fallen, socio-economic progress has come to the area.
From smuggling to farming
The border area was once full of crime. For men and women along the border, illegally moving goods, from cattle to many other things, was treated as normal. Those same people on the Thakurgaon border have turned their lives around through the many activities of BGB 30 Battalion.
Many now farm fish in the rivers along the border, and some have set up poultry and livestock farms.
Wider change
Through villagers' combined efforts, roads and communications have changed dramatically. Agriculture has grown everywhere, solar power has reached home after home, and all the children of marginal farmers now go to school.
Those involved hope these small changes will drive a larger development journey.
