Bangladesh has set a target of 10 lakh cataract operations and 1 crore pairs of glasses by 2030 to tackle blindness and poor vision. Health state minister Dr M A Muhit announced the goal on Tuesday at a global eye health summit organised by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, with Bangladesh as co-host.
He said a national eye health action plan would run from 2026 to 2030, and that about 2 crore people would be brought into care in the same period through expanded national referral services.
Preventable blindness, he said, is not only a human tragedy but also a heavy burden on society and the economy, and healthy sight is essential to children's development, human resources and national productivity.
He said the national commitment was an eye test for every citizen and a Bangladesh free of preventable blindness, and that the government would work through the health system on prevention and awareness, together with national and international non-government development organisations.
