A sudden storm with strong winds on Wednesday afternoon (7 October) damaged banana, pineapple, papaya and vegetable plots on about 80 hectares in Madhupur, Tangail. It struck Sholakuri, Fulbagchala, Aronkhola, Bhutia, Kuragachha and other parts of the upazila.

Banana plants snapped in some places and were uprooted in others, and pineapple, papaya and vegetable fields were also hit. Farmers said they had put long months of work and money into the crops, many of which were close to harvest, and they now fear heavy losses.

The affected farmers want a quick list of the damage, government help and advice from the agriculture department.

Madhupur upazila agriculture officer Momtaz Begum said gardens on about 80 hectares in five areas were damaged, field data were still being gathered and the figure could rise once the count was done. Dusk had stopped officials from seeing every area, and the damaged areas were to be inspected on Thursday morning, she said.
