Two fishing cats have been moving around Taltala village in Lakshindar union of Ghatail, Tangail, for some time. On Friday they were seen in the bushes beside a house, and alarm spread through the area.
Upazila forest officer Emran Ali said he went to the spot after hearing the news. People had mistaken the animals for leopards, he said, but they are fishing cats. A request not to panic and not to kill them was announced over the loudspeaker of the local mosque.
Local resident Bablu Mia said the animals were seen in bushes beside a house west of Aniknagar Park. A teenager named Harun filmed them on his phone. Once the video spread on Facebook, hundreds of people crowded beside the thicket.
Abdul Barek Mia said the two came out of the dense scrub to the west of his house, lay down and called loudly, and nobody dared go near them.
They ran off when people gathered after the announcement. Dhaka Tribune reports that they have not been caught and that residents remain afraid. Abdullah, a member of the local union council, said the fear spread across the whole area once the video was shared.
