Worshippers have held regular Friday prayers at the historic Sulaymaniyya Mosque in Damascus for the first time in 15 years. After long conflict, destruction and restoration, the mosque was opened on Friday, 6 November.
Built in the 16th century under the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the mosque was badly damaged in the Syrian war that began in 2011. A long period of repair and restoration followed.
According to Our Islam, large numbers of worshippers gathered in the main prayer hall and courtyard. The report says people in Damascus see the restoration as more than repair of a building: as a sign of peace and of a return to normal life.
