The 18th Asian Apicultural Association conference opens in China on Thursday, 15 October, with a 21-member team from Bangladesh taking part. The group brings together honey hunters, beekeepers, honey traders, researchers, entrepreneurs and consumers, and will give two oral research presentations and two poster presentations.

Citing the organisers, Samakal reports that delegates from 20 countries including Bangladesh will attend, along with some 300 industry specialists, 600 professional visitors and 100 companies. It is the largest Bangladeshi team yet at an international beekeeping conference.

Professor Dr Mohammad Atiqul Islam of the chemistry department at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University will present research on honey quality control. Md Akmul Hossain Mahmud of Al Madina Honey Agro Enterprise and honey researcher Syed Mohammad Mainul Anwar of the Alwan Museum will present research on modern beekeeping in Bangladesh.

One of the two posters is on Sundarbans honey, chosen to promote it internationally as a geographical indication (GI) product. The other covers the modernisation of beekeeping in Bangladesh.

The conference will showcase modern technology and innovation in beekeeping and the honey industry. The exhibition covers bee venom therapy, modern methods of testing honey quality, bee feed, and modern machinery for producing and processing honey. After the sessions, guests will visit places in China's Fujian province, including Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
